Alcatraz Island is a 25-acre island located just 1 1/4-miles from San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. Alcatraz is best known as the infamous and notorious former federal prison - home to the likes of Al Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelley, and Robert "The Birdman" Stroud. From 1933 to 1963, the Federal Bureau of Prisons used the facility as a maximum security prison. It was closed in 1963 due to its expense. Today Alcatraz swarms with tourists -- about a million a year.
Your trip to Alcatraz departs on a ferry from Pier 33. The ferry across the San Francisco Bay takes about 10 minutes.
To reach the Cell House, you walk from the wharf up the steep hill on the old service road. The Cell House is at the top of the island. Along the way, you can stop and visit exhibits, see a variety of buildings that were used for various prison uses, and enjoy the views. Access: SEAT (Sustainable Easy Access Transport), is available for wheelchair users and visitors with a mobility need who are unable to walk up the quarter mile, 12% grade hill. Another option is to walk along the Agave Trail. The trail begins near the ferryboat landing on the east side of Alcatraz Island and continues to the southern tip of the island. The Agave Trail passes through a protected bird sanctuary and features beautiful plants and flowers. This trail offers fabulous views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge.
The 35-minute audio headset tour of the Alcatraz cell block is a real highlight (for those who purchase the ticket that includes the Audio Tour). This tour is available in six languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. During the tour, you will hear stories from former inmates and prison guards as you walk through the cellblock. After the Cell Block tour, there is time to see all the sites around the island and visit the Alcatraz museum and bookshop.
Ferries depart approximately every half-hour back to San Francisco. You are free to stay as long as you like. Average time spent is 2 to 2 1/2-hours.
You'll marvel at the size of the giant redwoods at John Muir Woods. Muir Woods is located just 17 miles northwest of San Francisco just off Highway 1. The park was named for John Muir, a naturalist who was instrumental in establishing the National Park system. This National Monument is comprised of 560 acres of redwood forest. Cathedral and Bohemian Groves contain the largest Coastal redwoods - up to 252-feet tall and 14-feet across.
The 3 to 4 hour Muir Woods tour starts in San Francisco and heads through the Marina and the Presidio across the Golden Gate Bridge. From this point, there are spectacular views of San Francisco and the Marin Headlands. The tour continues north before winding along picturesque Highway 1 to Muir Woods. This 550-acre National Monument is home to Coastal Redwoods, some of the tallest and oldest trees in the world. You will be given a map and guide to the park showing various trails for a self-guided tour. Visitors are encouraged to visit the paved main trail that offers educational exhibits on the majestic redwood trees -- some known to be 1,000 years old. There are six miles of walking trails. The park is home to 50 species of birds, black-tailed deer, steelhead trout, and hundreds of other wild inhabitants. There is also a small cafe, a bookstore and a gift shop. The tour spends approximately one hour at Muir Woods.
Muir Woods is located only 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in an isolated canyon. The park offers solitude, interpretive displays and programs, and numerous hiking trails. The entrance fee to Muir Woods is included with this tour. From the redwoods, the tour heads back along the coastal road to Sausalito. The tour stops for approximately 45-minutes in Sausalito, allowing time for you to enjoy the bay views, shopping, galleries and fabulous mansions. Sausalito is home to some of the country's wealthiest citizens, and the views of Alcatraz Island, Angel Island, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, and the San Francisco skyline are breathtaking.
If you like, you can eat lunch in Sausalito, or you can wait until you return to Fisherman's Wharf to grab a bite. Sausalito is located just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, on the south-eastern tip of Marin County. Sausalito was named by 18th century Spanish explorers for the "little willow" trees -Saucelito which were found on the banks of its streams. Sausalito is a small town of only 7,500 residents.
